The Early Years Foundation Stage at Weston
Class structure

Weston is a small school and has three classes. Our largest class is currently 17 pupils.  The youngest class is Maple, where Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children learn together. Our mixed-age class means that our youngest children are supported and nurtured by older pupils, which helps them learn our day-to-day routines quickly and helps them settle in with ease.

Learning Environment
Inside

At Weston we believe that a calm, clean and welcoming learning environment is essential for supporting the progress and attainment of our pupils. Our recently renovated Maple Class has high-quality resources and ensures that the learning styles of all of our children are catered for. Each pupil has their own iPad for use in school and the classroom has a  top-of-the-range LCD screen, meaning that lessons are engaging and that children develop the technological skills they need in the modern world.

Outside

Our extensive outdoor area, including large log construction materials, play house, woodland area, sand pit and water play, allows children to explore the natural world, as well as apply and develop the skills they have learnt in the classroom. At Weston we believe strongly that engaging with nature and learning outside is essential for academic, social, physical and emotional development and we therefore use our outdoor area regularly for lessons as well as allowing pupils unlimited access during their independent learning time.  We also teach Outdoor Learning one afternoon a week.

Daily Routine

The children arrive at 8.45 and settle into the day with morning challenges. At 9.00am the children and staff join together for Collective Worship. Throughout the rest of the morning, the children participate in maths and phonics sessions, as well as having time for independent learning. During the morning the children are welcome to help themselves to a snack in our Snack Area as and when they feel hungry. Lunch is at 12.00pm and the Maple class and staff eat together, before the children then head out to play. The afternoon session starts at 1.00pm and consists of sessions such as RE, topic, PE and PSHE, as well as further opportunities for independent learning. The school day ends at 3.15pm.

Links with Parents and Carers

At Weston we pride ourselves on working closely with parents and carers in order to secure success for our pupils. In Early Years and Key Stage 1 we use Tapestry, an online assessment tool, to record and share children’s achievements with their parents and carers. We send monthly school newsletter and half-termly class curriculum letters, so that parents have up-to-date information on what is happening at school and what their children are learning. We regularly update our school website and Twitter page (@WestonStMary). Parents evenings are conducted twice a year and a school report is sent home at the end of the academic year. Alongside the formal means of communication, we are strong advocates of giving parents the opportunity to talk to their child’s teacher at the beginning and end of the school day. Therefore, class teachers are available on the playground before and after school.

We appreciate that choosing a school for your child is an extremely important decision and are happy to answer any questions. For more information, please call the school office on 01406 370333.
